Friday, June 17, 2022 –Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya team led by Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua met with mitumba officials from Central Region in Thika.
The team made the decision to meet with the traders following a recent countrywide uproar after Mr. Odinga made remarks on mitumba business which seemed not to go well with hundreds of traders.
While unveiling his 10-point manifesto at Nyayo Stadium on a Monday night, the ODM leader said that mitumba clothes worn by Kenyans had already been used by dead people in America.
“Our people are only wearing clothes coming from outside the country already worn by people who are dead.
“We are going to go to primary production so that our people who are importing mitumba can have good products to sell here,” he remarked.
He then went ahead to state that when he takes over power from August 9, he will seek to promote the local fabric industry by giving mitumba importers a first priority in marketing locally manufactured products.
“I’m saying that we are not moving anybody out of business. We will ensure that those who are importing mitumba get the first hand to market goods which are going to be manufactured here in this country,” he added.
Towards this end, Raila said his administration will re-introduce large scale cotton farming to sustain local manufacturing.
