Tuesday, August 15, 2023 –Parliament is set to debate on the legality of the National Dialogue for the ongoing government-opposition talks.
In a parliamentary session held today Tuesday August 15, the Parliament which deliberated on the motion, for the first time, agreed with the name ‘National Dialogue’ with both factions readying to table modalities and substance of the talks expected to officially kick off from next week.
The Raila team led by Minority leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi and that of government led by Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah, tabled the dialogue name(the National Dialogue) in the Parliament today.
At the Bomas of Kenya, both the Kalonzo-led side as well as the Ichung’wah side started deliberating on the important issues to be discussed in their sittings but the two are yet to reach at a final agreement.
Odinga’s side wants the discussion centered on the last general election and auditing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC servers as well as addressing the cost of living.
On the other hand, William Ruto’s wing led by Kimani Ichung’wah have warned that it will not tolerate talks surrounding the cost of living and opening of IEBC servers.
The government side argues that, anything to do with the cost of living remains a prerogative of the ruling party and not outsiders.
Both MP Ichung’wah(Kenya Kwanza) and Wandayi(Azimio) acknowledged the necessity of legal and constitutional dialogue with a requirement to have every item agreed on to be anchored in law through Parliamentary legislation.
The talks will also see other players including clergies, business persons, citizens among others also included in the month-long exercise.
