Thursday, March 2, 2023 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga has also denounced same gender relationships in the country saying it goes against the Kenyan Constitution.
On Thursday, March 2, the Azimio boss who was speaking during a meeting with the Council of Imams and Preachers, faulted the Supreme Court over its recent ruling on registration of LGBTQ groups in the country.
Raila referenced Article 45 of the Constitution which directed that every Kenyan has a right to marry the opposite gender; adding that going against this was not legal and cultural at the same time.
“Every adult has the right to marry a person of the opposite sex. This of the free consent of the parties. This refers to people of different sex, that’s the Constitution,” he added.
He noted that it’s not the responsibility of the Judiciary to formulate laws and if they see a loophole, they ought to recommend this to the Parliament for the law to be enacted or amended.
The Azimio supremo also seized the opportunity to urge every Kenyan to respect each other’s religion as the Constitution requires.
“That’s why the Constitution indicates that Kenya is a secular state hence when you’re the leader, you recognise all religions. So, on this matter, we will stand our ground,” he stated.
Raila’s statement comes as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed shock at the Supreme Court ruling that supported the registration of such communities in the country.
“I was shocked and even wondered what I could say. Do you know that there are times when you can be shocked until you have nothing to say? We are hearing that there is an organisation that wants to defend same-sex marriage. What is that?” he posed.
His boss President William Ruto also came clear on the matter saying he won’t allow foreign cultures to mess up youth in this country.
Gachagua and Ruto were both speaking during the launch of the Women Fund on March 2 in an event held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre KICC Nairobi.
