Friday, January 12, 2024 – Azimio la Umoja boss Raila Odinga has thrown weight behind the Judiciary over President William Ruto’s threats that court orders will no longer be respected.
Addressing in a funeral service in Migori County today Friday January 12, Mr. Odinga argued that President Ruto’s scheme is to deliberately weaken the Judiciary so that to evade scrutiny of his ‘struggling’ regime.
“Everybody must be subject to the court…we want to tell the judges of the courts not to be cowed…we will defend you…we stand together… as the people of Kenya we are behind the Judiciary,” he said.
The Azimio chief said it is surprising that the President is attacking the Judiciary when his presidency was a result of a judgment of the Supreme Court after the August 2022 election.
“We are dealing with a regime that has gone rogue….we struggled to bring this Constitution…we lost people because of this Constitution.
“Ruto himself is a product of courts,” Raila noted.
Several legislators and Governors who accompanied Mr. Odinga termed the attacks spearheaded by the President as a deliberate attempt to take back the country to the past dark days of dictatorship.
Siaya Governor James Orengo said Ruto is not above the law; and cannot disobey the law as he had threatened days ago.
Nominated MP John Mbadi stated that true colours of Ruto are finally out and alerted the country to remain vigil.
“The Ruto we see today is the real Ruto…dictatorship is the real Ruto…the one attacking the Judiciary is the real Ruto….we will not allow you to bring back dictatorship in this country”.
Ealier, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who was speaking on demonstrations held today against the head of State said politicians will stand in solidarity with the Judiciary amid attacks from the executive.
“Led by President Eric Theuri, we stand in solidarity with the Judiciary, with Kenyans, and with the historical document; The Constitution of Kenya, 2010. The sustained aggression by the Executive on the Judiciary is an affront to our democracy and we all must loudly condemn these actions,” Kalonzo stated.
He believes that this intimidation is an attempt to influence the decision on the Housing Tax currently in the courts and said this must be stopped so that to protect the independence of the Judiciary.
They were speaking separately over Ruto’s recent remarks on the Judiciary.
Ruto promised to ignore certain court orders saying the opposition was colluding with some rogue judges to interfere with his work to develop the country.
