Sunday, July 24, 2022 –Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has officially pulled out of the Tuesday presidential debate.
His Campaign Secretariat spokesman Prof. Makau Mutua has released a long statement in which he argues that DP William Ruto’s strange demands that the debate should not focus on pertinent issues affecting the country was a way of evading serious discussion and, therefore, not worth being given any attention.
In the press release of Sunday July 24, Prof. Mutua argued that the request from United Democratic alliance UDA Party that some issues would not form part of the discussion was a way to deviate from the purpose of the national debate.
“That is why he has demanded that the debate should not focus on corruption, ethics and governance. These are issues at the core of the Azimio campaign; any debate devoid of these questions will be an insult to the intelligence of Kenyans,” he stated.
Therefore, Raila’s participation in such an exercise that looks like a Public Relations stunt for Ruto, would amount to campaigning for UDA indirectly.
“It would be a colossal mistake to reward such a person with a national debate. We will not assist his failing campaign; he can explain himself and his poor record to voters without our help,” he remarked.
Instead, Makau said that their Azimio la Umoja leadership will be holding a healthy televised Town Hall event at Jericho Social Hall in Nairobi Eastlands where ordinary Kenyans will be accorded space to attend, ask questions and get substantive response. Media is also invited to field questions.
This event will focus on offering the country tangible solutions to their challenges.
