Raila’s Close Friend Asks him to Retire Honourably

Tuesday, September 26, 2023 –Raila Odinga’s Chief Agent in the last General election Lawyer Saitabao Ole Kanchory has challenged him not to run in 2027.

In a statement seen by Homenews.Co.ke on Tuesday September 26 afternoon, Kanchory details that it is high time Odinga retires from politics, after unsuccessfully running for the presidency five terms.

Though he agrees that Odinga can still give President William Ruto a run for his money in 2027, he turns around to say, it makes logic for the Azimio la Umoja boss to call it enough and install an opposition candidate this early ahead of the next general election.

“Raila Odinga is William Ruto’s 2027 Trump card. Even as an octogenarian, Raila Odinga will most likely still have his mojo and may have the unparalleled energy, resources, support and even desire to run again.

“But Baba must (for heaven’s sake) now plan his succession and take his last bow. Whether we like it or not, Baba’s time in the political space is up. The only question is whether he will leave the stage on a high or a low,” Lawyer Kanchory remarked.

Raila Tells off critics

Kanchory’s remarks coming two days after Odinga, who was speaking from Siaya, told off those calling for his resignation from politics.

He affirmed that he will not retire soon as many people have claimed and that he also doesn’t owe anyone an explanation on the topic.

Odinga noted that his aim in politics was quite different from what others think adding that this country requires vigilance at this time more than before.

He, therefore, asked his supporters to focus energy on the bigger picture ahead rather than to speak about his succession.

On the way back to Bondo

Commenting on when he will be heading back to the Village, the opposition leader said he is capable of driving back home on his own without anybody’s help or request.

He was speaking this in reference to Kenya Kwanza leaders’ campaign threats that they will take him back to Bondo his village.

“Some people have been saying that they will take me back to Bondo. I want to tell them I know the way to Bondo better than them. That is my home and I know it better than anybody else.

“The day I decide to go back to Bondo, I will not seek permission from anyone. I will find my way there. Certainly, that time has not come; I am still here, so let them shut up,” said Raila.

Debate on Raila’s succession rages on with notable figures in the Luo Nyanza politics positioning themselves to take over the job.

Early this month, his brother Oburu Odinga proposed that Ugunja Member of Parliament MP Opiyo Wandayi was the most preferred successor for Odinga.

Tasked to explain why Wandayi, he said, naturally, the MP falls into that space and that regional kingpins are self-made, they are not made or installed by anyone.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, whom youths are quietly pushing, on his part, opined that discussing Raila’s succession at this time is ‘treasonous’.
