Monday, March 20, 2023 –Azimio la Umoja leaders are expected to clash with the police as they officially commence their indefinite protests against the William Ruto’s seven-months-old administration.
Despite the police, led by Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei, on Sunday March 19, warning the opposition against holding any mass action in the country, Raila quickly countered the announcement and asked supporters to start arriving in the city’s CBD as early as 6AM.
“I’m calling on all Kenyans of goodwill to wake up very early in the morning and gather at the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD),” Raila announced while on a tour in Ongata Rongai.
In an apparent response to authorities’ attempts to outlaw the whole exercise, the daring former presidential candidate said that every Kenyan has a right to hold a demo as it is enshrined in the Constitution.
“The mass action is your right, and there is no one who should by any means take that right from you,” Raila said.
The Monday March 20 mass action, according to political analysts, is the first acid test for William Ruto’s government.
Among other issues Odinga has raised, he wants Ruto to open Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC servers to ascertain who won the August 9 election, stop IEBC commissioners selection exercise and make it as inclusive as possible, and last but not least, lower the cost of living for Kenyans as per the promises made during the last campaigns.
