Saturday, May 15, 2021 -Barely a day after five judge bench nullified the Building Bridges Initiative BBI project as an unconstitutional process, ODM Party boss Raila Odinga has issued a statement.
His Saturday May 15 fairly long statement poked holes into some sections of the Thursday May 13 ruling but mentioned the independence of the Judiciary as equally important.
Mr. Odinga seemed to be asking all aggrieved supporters not to hurl accusations at anyone due to that ruling. He asked for sobriety as well as respect to the judges who presided over the tension-packed exercise.
“The Judiciary sits at the center of the democratic experiment in both established and emerging democracies. It is a key pillar of our democracy. In fact, no country can be a democracy without a strong and independent Judiciary.
“It is the judiciary, among the three arms of government, which is the final arbiter of our constitution. That is why every citizen and institution within the state must respect the rulings of the judiciary, even when they are adverse to their interests,” partly read first section of the statement.
The former Prime Minister promised to exploit all legal measures so that to find justice over the ruling which seemingly left the country divided at the center.
“We will do so with sobriety and with respect for our judges and courts. Ultimately, our objective is to strengthen, not undermine, the judiciary,” he added.
Mr. Odinga took Kenyans through the hard and arduous journey to freedom that the country had traveled saying that cannot be destroyed within a day.
“The 2010 Constitution itself is a monument to that struggle. There were moments of great danger and peril along that journey,” recounted Raila.
For that reason, the ODM Party leader argued that anything done with regard to the BBI or 2022 succession must be done in a respectful and peaceful way.
