Tuesday, November 22, 2022 –A section of Rift Valley leaders allied to United Democratic Alliance UDA Party have trailed their guns at CS Moses Kuria over maize importation orders.
In their Tuesday November 22 press briefing, the politicians led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei took issue with the new Trade and Indistralisation Cabinet Secretary CS for allowing maize imports into the country at the expense of local farming.
They warned that should this exercise not be halted immediately, they are going to hatch a scheme to make sure Kuria is removed from that docket.
“As MPs from maize-producing regions, we seek to know the reason as to why ships are already docking in Mombasa Port without the laid out legal procedures,” Nandi Senator Cherargei said.
On his part, Pokot South MP David Pkosing threatened that a plan to collect enough signatures to make his(Kuria) removal a success is in the offing.
“He will be the first Cabinet Secretary to leave office. We will impeach him. We will collect signatures if he doesn’t change,” he said.
Their harsh reaction started immediately after learning that Kuria was not honest with his latest announcement that a Gazette Notice would be issued to local farmers allowing them to bring into the country Genetically Modified maize imports.
For instance, even before the Gazette Notice is out, already a ship had docked at Mombasa Port carrying first supply into the country.
It is not yet clear whether the maize is part of the GMO threat or not.
