Saturday, August 24, 2024 –President William Ruto has assured members of the public that he will fast-track consolidation of bursaries into one distribution kitty.
Addressing the matter for the first time today Saturday August 24, the head of State noted that the ongoing debate on pulling together bursaries into one kitty is timely and that, though, it will not be easy to persuade the legislation to vote in favour of the Bill, he assured that he will have to take the difficult decisions as the head of State.
“You know the people am dealing with. It may not be easy but as long as am sure am doing the rightful thing, am not scared taking the big decision,” he stated.
Misused Bursaries
Dr. Ruto said, the money for the education kitty has, in the recent past, been misused by MPs by choosing beneficiaries and not giving it to those who should genuinely benefit.
The commander-in-chief also said these is part of the drastic measures he is looking at so that to make this nation a self-reliant capital.
He revisited the topic of over-borrowing saying, in the last financial year, this country borrowed five times more than the usual rate what should now stop.
“I have made a decision that we do not continue to borrow. That one I have made the decision. Guys from 2013 to 2022 we increased our borrowing five times. Today we are paying sh 1.1 trillion every year only on interest of the money we collect sh 2.2 trillion of which a half goes to paying debts,” he noted further.
Tax increment
President Ruto then said he will remain pushing for increased domestic taxes so that to save this country from the burden of external debts.
This week, Chief Justice Martha Koome talked about the bursary kitty which he made a similar consolidation proposal.
