Ruto Announces Huge Breakthrough as he Signs Deals in South Korea

Wednesday, June 5, 2024 –Kenya has formally joined the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) as a Member State. President William Ruto has made this official announcement.

In his statement on Wednesday June 5, Dr. Ruto said, this will strengthen Kenya’s resolve to achieve the much-required reliance in Vaccine production.

“Increased vaccine availability will enhance the delivery of our primary healthcare and disease prevention. During the accession ceremony of Kenya at IVI headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, in the company of IVI Director-General Jerome Kim. IVI committed to establish a Country and Project Office in Nairobi, which will be dedicated to the operations of its Advancing Vaccines End-to-End Capabilities (AVEC),” he stated

Ruto used the opportunity in South Korea to address ‘High Level Business Segment on Climate Change Response and Transition to Carbon-Free Energy’ in Seoul, South Korea.

In his speech, the head of State observed that last year of 2013 recorded the largest increase in renewable energy, with the addition of about 500 Gigawatts globally and new investments worth $600 billion, what is an encouraging outcome.

Unfortunately, according to the latest data, Africa could only manage 3 Gigawatts of this increase and yet the continent offers huge opportunities in clean energy for investors from the Global North.

In an earlier meeting of Tuesday, Ruto announced his first breakthrough as the Korea Exim Bank which is funding many projects in Kenya signed a $238 million (Sh 31 billion) financing agreement for the implementation of the Konza Digital Media City at the Konza Technopolis that will provide an excellent digital media and entertainment platform for research and training at Kenya’s Silicon Savannah.

Other programmes in the pipeline include the dualling of the 78KM Machakos Junction-Emali Road, water supply infrastructure to Konza and a multimillion vaccine production project.

The meeting saw the president meet Korea Exim Bank Chairman and President Yoon Hee-sung in Seoul, South Korea. Also present was Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa who is part of the working visit.
