Wednesday, March 15, 2023 – President William Ruto has asked Azimio la Umoja boss, Raila Odinga, to work hand-in-hand with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki in making sure there are no damages caused during March 20 protests.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders fetched from Western Region, Ruto urged Raila to consider safety even as they plan to take to the streets from Monday.
“It is your responsibility to work with the police to ensure that for the rest of the citizens in Kenya, their lives are not disrupted their property is not destroyed and their businesses are not affected and they can go to work, you can carry out demonstrations,” President Ruto remarked.
He, however, clarified that it will be hard to blackmail the State into his(Azimio) demands when the law says otherwise.
On his part, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua described Raila’s actions as pretentious since he never took to the streets when Uhuru Kenyatta was still in power and yet the cost of living was unbearable.
Moreover, Chief Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told off Odinga over his Tuesday declaration of public holiday.
According to the Prime CS, Raila was now out to preach and spread impunity in the name of fighting for the poor Kenyans.
“What are you going to do to the businesses that will lose income on that day? What are you going to do to the employees who will be forced to lose their jobs because you blocked them from going to work? Will you take over their household responsibilities?” he asked.
These remarks were supported by other leaders including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula who asked Odinga not to mislead the country.
Azimio la Umoja’s countrywide protests will officially kick off from Monday March 20; this being part of the opposition’s efforts in piling pressure on the regime to save Kenyans from biting hunger.
Raila also wants Ruto to stop single-handed picking of the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC officials.
