Friday August 18, 2023 –President William Ruto has met with the United States of America U.S.A Senator Chris Coons at the Statehouse, Nairobi.
Making the confirmation on Friday August 18, the head of State divulged that their discussion touched on expansion of trade and investment opportunities for both nations.
Dr. Ruto also stated that the mutual beneficial partnership will stretch to climate change mitigation efforts and environmental conversation.
“Kenya is keen on enhancing its relations with the United States to expand trade and investment opportunities for citizens of both nations. This mutually beneficial partnership will extend to climate change mitigation efforts and environmental conservation,” he noted.
On their part, the US delegation used the opportunity to appreciate Kenya as one of the vibrant democracies in the world.
The US delegation and President Ruto also highlighted issues like security and progressive path of devolved units in Kenya.
“We appreciated Kenya as one of the most vibrant democracies in the world. Also discussed global security issues, climate change and the progressive path of devolution in Kenya,” a statement from the Statehouse read further.
The meeting saw Kenya’s foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua attend as well as American Ambassador in Kenya Meg Whitman.
This meeting is taking place just a week – on August 13 – after Coons also met with the opposition leader Raila Odinga in a meeting the latter described as successful.
“It was a great pleasure as usual to meet and exchange notes with my friend Senator Chris Coons. An afternoon well spent,” Raila captioned their photo with Coons.
Coons is credited for the 2018 Handshake between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition boss Raila Odinga.
The American senator shuttled between his country and Kenya several times in his attempt to unite the Kenya’s opposition with the then administration of Uhuru Kenyatta, in an exercise which culminated into a grand handshake between the two leaders – Uhuru and Odinga.
