Monday, March 4, 2024 –Opposition figure also Safina Presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi has doubted Kenya Kwanza administration’s ability to turn around the economy.

He added further that the borrowing spree of this government will make it hard for Kenyans to be relived off the burden of the ever-skyrocketing cost of living.

Speaking on the topic of public debt, the businessman-cum-politician stated that, on February 27, government of William Ruto had borrowed 223 billion.

“In regards to Public debt on February 27th the National Treasury submitted a report to parliament indicating that Kenya had borrowed 223 billion shillings from September to January.

“In just February alone Kenya has added 545 billion shillings to that borrowing making the total for six months 768 billion shillings, which is more than Uhuru Kenyatta’s highest borrowing spree in the year 2022/2023,” he added.

This borrowing took place despite the fact that the Parliament had only approved sh 341 billion.

“Parliament has only approved borrowing of 341 billion, this is purely illegal. Where is it allowed to borrow more in order to pay back an existing loan or where, in the budget, can we take an infrastructure bond to fund infrastructure? This is a debt driven economy and we are becoming slaves to it,” he further charged saying Uhuru borrowed only 800b in 2022/23.

The Safina Party leader also sought answers on why the State borrowed another sh 240 billion infrastructure bond.

Days ago, Monday, February 26, 2024, the Nation newspaper quoted Mr. Wanjigi calling out the old guards in leadership who included Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka to pack and give room to new and fresh blood.

“The old political order must perish with Ruto, Raila and Kalonzo; it is time for new blood in the country’s politics.
