Saturday, October 28, 2023 –Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen have openly differed on road construction contracts in Rift valley.
Cherargei,, who was speaking in a funeral service of the son of Chesumei MP Paul Biego Polo, had said non-local road contractors in the area should be chased away. He openly advocated for local contractors’ plight emphasizing that jobless youths require protection from the Ministry of Roads and Transport under Kipchumba Murkomen.
“Thank you, CS, for coming. You know few people tell you the truth. Work in Nandi is not good. Thank you, Waziri, for the road that is being undertaken, Mosorit.
“I hear that some people are saying that they want to bring people from other communities to be contractors. Give our children the priority of being contractors because if we don’t teach our children to be strong contractors, we won’t be competitive.” he opined in his dialect.
Immediately, after this statement, Cabinet Secretary CS Kipchumba Murkomen who was disturbed by the remarks told him off saying the move would also affect locals working elsewhere.
He clarified that any Kenyan has a right to work anywhere within and without the Republic of Kenya as enshrined in the Constitution.
“What about our people whom we have given big contracts owing billions and are in Central and Mombasa? Do you want them to be chased to come home? As your teacher, I have brains and a plan,” the CS repulsed.
To defend his stand, Murokomen reminded Cherargei that such a mindset could not have made Dr. Ruto President.
“Cherargei has only one problem, and if William Ruto had reasoned like him, then he wouldn’t be President.
“Any contractor who comes to Mosoriot from any community, be it a Kisii or any other, let’s welcome them all to build us roads. My work as the CS is to ensure that all roads are constructed properly,” CS Murkomen responded.
He seized the opportunity to further blast the Senator that immediately he(Cherargei) was re-elected to the Senate, he distanced himself from the President.
Present in the function were Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Chief of Staff and the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapsaret) and Ndindi Nyoro from Kiharu Constituency in Central Kenya.
