Sunday, December 5, 2021 –Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua is top on the list of the persons Deputy President William Ruto wants to pick as running mate.
Hinting on this for the first time, Dr. Ruto said Mathira Member of Parliament was a hardworking man who is capable of marshaling national support for their United Democratic Alliance UDA Party.
In his Nyeri speech on Saturday December 4, Ruto pleaded with residents to allow him work with Mr. Gachagua in seeking the top seat and at the same time urged them to defend his parliamentary seat in Mathira.
“I am glad you have given me kande ya wera (Gachagua) to help me to seek the national votes and you will protect his seat here at home. Should I take him to help me?” the DP posed.
This development is coming at a time there have been much speculations over who Ruto could be preparing to work with as 2022 elections nears. Among the key figures from the vote rich Mt Kenya Region is the recently defected Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Ex-Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Narc-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua.
Gachagua choice is informed by the fact that he has for a long time remained Ruto’s loyal and vocal supporter in the region perceived to be President Uhuru Kenyatta’s stronghold.
Before politics, the MP served as a District Officer (DO) and as a personal assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta during his unsuccessful 2002 presidential race.
Mr. Gachagua is the younger brother to former Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua who passed on in February 2017.
He is also mentioned among the wealthy businessmen from Mt Kenya with interest in government tenders, supplies and real estate.
During a recent interview on live Tv, the legislator claimed to have single-handedly funded Jubilee Party rallies in 2017 in his Constituency.
He is also fighting several multi-million graft cases in court.
