Monday, October 9, 2023 –President William Ruto has today heaped praises on his predecessor former President Kenyatta over MV Uhuru II vessel in Kisumu City.
Commending on the good work by his former boss, President Ruto mentioned that the initiative was a game changer for not only the people of Kisumu but also East Africa as a whole.
MV Uhuru remains the only locally assembled ship. It was assembled at the Kisumu Shipyard and was commissioned by former president Uhuru Kenyatta during one of his 2022 many tours in Kisumu.
And on Monday. Dr. Ruto said Uhuru had done a phenomenal work to launch the ship and that this was a good idea for the country.
“I must congratulate my predecessor for his foresight in coming up with this shipyard refurbishment. When one morning he asked me to visit Kisumu and see what the military could do, when we came here, it was a heap of dirt, wreckage and old buildings,” he said.
After taking over from Mr. Kenyatta, Kenya defence Forces KDF sought to know whether Ruto would continue supporting the project; and he agreed to make sure it runs its complete circle.
The President revealed that he was asked whether the project would continue when he took office.
“To see what we are seeing here today is phenomenal and I must say a lot for President Uhuru Kenyatta and the leadership of our military with a lot of foresight drove this programme to where we are today,” Ruto announced.
MV Uhuru II is a cargo ship equipped with a range of advanced systems that are essential for its safe and efficient operation.
“Lake Victoria is a geostrategical resource that must be optimised to reduce trade costs and enhance integration in East Africa. The investments we are making in it will elevate the lake’s profile as a maritime transport of choice and help exploit its huge untapped economic potential,” President Ruto stated in a subsequent statement
Ruto made the comments in Kisumu as the former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, on Monday, opened the 55th Annual Round Square International Conference (RSIC) at the Bomas of Kenya Auditorium, Nairobi.
The event, an international students conference hosted by different schools around the world, is run by and for students aged 16 to 18.
This year’s event was hosted by Brookhouse Schools.
