Tuesday, March 29, 2022 –Deputy President William Ruto has today made a mega promise to University learners across the country.
The DP today Tuesday March 29 while in Kwale County mentioned how he was not happy with the life student were being subjected to in the country and this he said will be changed to boost learning activities in the country.
He singled out the Education Loans which he argued are tools used to punish innocent students in the country instead of it being a channel for increased and better education.
Ruto also argued that once he is sworn into office, he will embark on revising the Higher Education Loans Board HELB to make it accessible and easy for everybody.
“We want to revise HELB and the funds that are given. We want to first remove the interest and because that money is very little it should be increased so that comrades can have enough to pay for their needs.
“I know the money comes very late and people are struggling at that time. We will hasten the process and make sure no one is listed in CRB because of Helb. In future we will make the fund to be a grant, especially to the needy children,” Ruto added.
He said that his government will not penalize defaulters as well as levy interests on such loans since it was not looking good to do business with students instead of supporting them.
He also promised that, unlike today, the loans will have to be distributed in time to reduce inconveniences to learners.
The United Democratic Alliance UDA Party boss further added that the move to list students in the Credit Reference Bureau CRB was archaic and will have to stop as soon as he takes office.
This move by the DP is part of the many promises he has been making for learners in the country. For instance, the laptop pledge to pupils failed as soon as it started.
Further, the job opportunities their Jubilee government promised the youth around the country never happened todate. It will therefore be interesting to see how he will have to deliver on the fresh pledges should he win the power on August 9.
