Tuesday, July 9, 2024 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto have orgainised a six-day forum staring Monday next week to dialogue.
In a statement issued by President William Ruto at the KICC today Tuesday July 9, Ruto confirmed that, together with other stakeholders, they will have a week-long conversation surrounding the challenges currently facing the country.
The event will also see the participants come up with the best way to form the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners IEBC so that to start early preparations for the 2027 general election.
“We welcome every stakeholder to work with us in addressing the existential challenges and threats facing Kenya. Through broad-based political mechanism, we can rally the country forward. At KICC, Nairobi, assented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Bill, the first of the nine products of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) Report. Today’s signing marks the beginning of the reconstitution of the IEBC and testifies to our country’s ability to attend to its pressing issues and priorities through routine dialogue and consultations,” remarked President William Ruto.
Ruto in agreement
Ruto said their forum will help his administration and the rest of the country to agree on how to take the country forward, together.
“This forum will begin Monday next week and end on Saturday next week. This is a six-day forum to propose the way forward for the country,” Dr. Ruto further said.
On behalf of his supporters and the entire Azimio fraternity, Odinga said there was an urgent need for talks that would center on resolving the current economic, political and leadership standoff.
He agreed with Mr. Kalonzo Musyoka that, though the Kenya Kwanza administration did not want the rest of the country to be involved in the cost-of-living dialogue as had been proposed at the Bomas NADCO sittings, it has come to a time when everyone now wants that discussion back.
“I agree with my brother Kakonzo that as Azimio we wanted the matter of the cost of living to be discussed as part of NADCO. Kenya Kwanza insisted “that it was strictly a government affair.” However, as is evident even today, the cost of living is the most important issue,” noted Odinga.
KDF in Demonstrations
He also seized the opportunity to urge the government to withdraw the KDF army from the Kenyan streets amid youths protests.
“Unless we are in a state of emergency, the police and army should immediately be taken off the streets. All victims of police brutality must be compensated”.
Both parties announced that every participant will foot their own attendance cost. This is in the interest of cost of living affecting the country and living within means.
