Monday, February 27, 2023 –United Democratic Alliance UDA Party has picked former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala to be their Secretary General SG.
Mr. Malala will now be replacing nominated Senator Veronica Maina as Cecily Mbarire takes over as Chairperson of the ruling party after Johnson Muthama applied for Public Service Commission PSC position, recently.
These changes are happening when the party had already announced its grassroots election scheduled March 1 2023.
“Only bonafide and registered UDA party members will be eligible either to vote during the grassroots elections or to be elected as UDA Party Officials.
“In order to adequately prepare for this exercise, the UDA party will roll out a party membership registration drive to enhance the registration of all those persons interested in participating in this exercise,” SG Veronica Maina communicated.
Malala’ elevation to the top party leadership is coming amid claims that he was set to be named as Cabinet Administrative Secretary CAS following recent court ruling allowing President Ruto to go ahead with the appointments.
Malala, unsuccefully, ran for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat in 2022 but was beaten by Fernandes Barasa of Orange Democratic Movement ODM Party.
Mbarire, on the other hand lost Embu County seat to her rival
