Saturday, September 24, 2022 –Newly-elected President William Ruto has affirmed his commitment to work with his retired boss, Uhuru Kenyatta.
Addressing the question on France 24, Dr. Ruto explained that, despite their pre-election differences, it was a good idea to work with Uhuru so that to ferment the issue of unity not only in Kenya but across Africa.
He added that sidelining his predecessor could affect many African countries which still requires his(Uhuru’s) input in matters peace building.
“I appointed President Uhuru as an envoy because I’m different. I believe that President Kenyatta brings value to the processes in Ethiopia and DRC. What was there between him and me was a competition,” he observed.
He therefore mentioned the DRC Congo and Ethiopia as key areas that still requires the services of an experienced leader like Uhuru Kenyatta.
Ruto further argued that any lack of peace in Ethiopia automatically affects Kenya and that this cannot be overemphasized.
“It wasn’t a competition between me and the person he supported (Raila Odinga). Being a democracy, we are mature enough to understand that we can compete but we don’t have to be enemies but compatriots,” Ruto explained.
He acknowledged that, he stands high risk to be blamed should anything go wrong in Kenya including failure to address neighboring matters when need arises.
“When things fall apart, it will stop at my desk. I can only be effective in doing what the people of Kenya want if the region is not a problem.
“If somebody else can help me with the regional issues so that I can concentrate my energy, efforts and time in sorting out the issues Kenyans want me to do, I think that is the right decision,” the president detailed.
President Ruto appointed Uhuru the first day he was sworn into power at Moi Sports Center Kasarani on Tuesday September 13.
This happened in the presence of other African heads of States among them Uganda’s Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
