Friday, May 6, 2022 –Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party has proposed two names for the competitive running mate slot in Azimio-One Kenya alliance.
The party’s National Elections Board NEB led by chairman, Stephen Wandeto, listed the name of Murang’a Woman Representative Ms Sabina Chege alongside Gatanga ex-MP Peter Kenneth as their favourites.
The two names, Kenneth and Chege, will be part of the long list of the names parties in Azimio have fronted to be considered by the recently constituted seven-member panel chaired by former Cabinet Secretary, Noah Wekesa.
“We refer to the above subject matter and forwarded herewith names of the persons proposed by Jubilee for consideration as the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Deputy President nominees,” read the letter from Jubilee Party leadership.
Peter Kenneth and Sabina Chege have all along been part of the Azimio campaign machinery and recently she announced her unwillingness to not defend her Murang’a seat; so therefore it is not clear if this was part of her bigger game plan.
On the other hand, Peter Kenneth has also been together with Raila Odinga and touted by pundits as the towering figure among the running mate candidates. He has also been key in many of the Mt. Kenya Azimio forums appearing in all coalition meetings organized in their region that have been hosting Mr. Odinga.
Nonetheless, it is also being widely confirmed that Martha Karua of Narc-Kenya Party has managed to squeeze her name into this list of running mates due to her zeal, focus and popularity.
All these happening despite the fact that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been vocal about hsi willingness to take up the job.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC recently extended period for naming the running mate from April 28 to May 16.
