Wednesday, November 22, 2023 –Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja now claims that the teenager whose groundnuts were, on Wednesday, spilled on the ground by City Askaris, is a sympathy addict.

The Governor who finally met with the boy in his office said he has established that the young boy is notorious of pulling sympathy stunts anytime he breaks city rules that guide traders.

The scene

“A number of hawkers employ this tactic which naturally attracts sympathy and public outrage and prevents their further arrest,” said Sakaja.

Confirming meeting with boy today Wednesday November 22, Sakaja said the teenage Burundian national went against the new County Government rules which he (Governor) announced recently.

He added that most other traders were already adhering to the new city rules.

“Earlier in the month, the Governor had brought together the leadership of hawkers, traders, and enforcement officers, where an agreement was reached on the streets where hawkers are allowed to operate from as well as operating times which begin at 4:00 pm in the CBD,” read part of the statement.

“This has been largely complied with to the joy of pedestrians, shop owners, and the hawkers themselves.”

The County CEO, however, said, though the boy had broken some basic rules governing how hawkers should move, he deserved a fairer treatment from the county askaris who handled the matter.

“Unfortunately, when Ndagire was caught and the enforcement officer impounded his goods, the minor struggled for the bucket spilling its contents onto the ground after the handle broke,” Governor Sakaja explained further.

Sakaja, on the same note, revealed talking to the Burundian Ambassador to Kenya to intervene and help the boy move out of the streets for education or any other suitable training.

The city boss revealed that, in his conversation with the Burundian envoy, the two parties agreed to ensure the boy’s interests were well catered for including education.

“I met him and later engaged Burundian Ambassador to Kenya to discuss safeguarding the minor as well as dealing with the child trafficking/hawking & beggar syndicate in the region”.

The hawker’s drama ensuing just a month after several boiled eggs traders also felt the same wrath from baton-wielding Kanjos who spilled down their stock.

Sakaja would come out to rescue the traders with a support of sh 10,000 each.
