Friday, September 20, 2024 –Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has been grated seven days to redeem himself.
The court today Friday gave the IG a week to make sure he avails himself in person in court for his contempt case failure to his six months sentence will be enforced, again.
In his directive, Justice Lawrence Mugambi announced the suspension of Masengeli’s sentence which was set to start today.
“Mr Gilbert Masengeli can avoid the sentence if he complies with the direction to obey the court summons,” Justice Mugambi stated.
“I therefore suspend the sentence for 7 days only. He can redeem himself by availing himself before the court in person,” Judge Mugambi added.
In the proceedings today, Justice Mugambi adjourned the sesion for 30 minutes after which Masengeli would be allowed to submit his comments on the matter.
Before the adjournment, Masengeli had begun explaining himself that among his duties was to protect the country’s borders. He was represented by Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, who at some point appeared to clash with AG Oduor, and lawyer Steve Ogolla.
The case which has since attracted public attention was lodged by the Law Society of Kenya which sought the court to compel the police IG to release the three Kitengela abductees, Bob Njagi, Jamil Longton and his brother Aslam Longton.
However, the abductees have since been freed today morning by the new IG Mr. Douglas Kanja.
