Senate Dismisses Impeachment bid Against Siaya DG William Oduol

Monday, June 26, 2023 –Embattled Siaya County Deputy Governor William Oduol has survived impeachment after lawmakers voted against the Committee’s report produced today.

The Special Committee in the Senate had found the DG guilty of two charges that could have warranted his ouster from office following his bitter fallout with his boss, James Orengo.

However, while considering the report, the Senate special sitting saved the DG from removal as majority of senators argued that there were not serious reasons meeting the threshold of his removal.

“The net effect of this vote is done pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution. It is important to state that the Senate has failed to impeach the Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol, and he will continue to hold office,” Speaker Amason Kingi ruled.

Earlier on, the report from the Committee had provided that the County official had violated the law by misleading the country on multi-million corruption in Siaya County.

This is with regard to the whistle-blowing he carried out in which he accused his boss together with a few other county officials of looting county resources; more specifically millions of money in a single day.

While saving him from impeachment, 27 senators dismissed all the charges leveled against him while 16 approved this.

“The Senate has failed to remove from office by impeachment William Oduol, the Deputy Governor of Siaya County and that the Deputy Governor accordingly continues to hold office,” Amason Kingi announced after the voting.

Our sources confirmed that, 36 members of the Senate were physically present in Parliament while three participated online.
