Wednesday, July 3, 2024 –Kericho County Senator Aaron Cheruiyot now wants President William Ruto to make changes at the Police leadership.

Speaking on the floor of the House on Thursday July 3, the United Democratic Alliance UDA Party elected senator observed that it was not amusing to see the inspector general of police Japhet Koome quiet for weeks amid tension in the country.

In his Parliamentary statement, Cheruiyot noted that the police head should have been making daily updates to the country so that to assure citizens and other visitors of their safety to carry on with their nation-building activities.

“It is interesting that as the country faces such a crisis, upto this particular point, I don’t know what the inspector general of police thinks of this. The question at the back of my mind is that, is this man the right for this job,” he posed.

The lawmaker also cited Article 37, which needs to be refined so that to help define peaceful and un-peaceful demonstrations just like other nations do.

He said, it is upto the Parliament to enact laws that can separate legal and illegal demonstrations so that people can be charged when they break the picketing guidelines.

Cheruiyot also challenged the Parliament to always be ready to listen to outsiders who may have grouped themselves to visit the Parliament to present a petition.

“We have heard conversations whether demonstrations are peaceful of not. What is it that we are supposed to do? We need to provide rules and guidelines on this matter.

“Anytime when we organise peaceful protests, some people take advantage. We must provide the way forward and guidelines so that those who infiltrate such peaceful activities are arrested and charged in court while those who observe peace are spared,” added Cheruiyot.

He recounted a recent incident where youths stormed the Parliament and, instead, of being welcomed, the police immediately started repulsing them.

According to Cheruiyot, this was not necessary because the young men and women had a petition which they wanted to present to the House.

He sided with the demonstrators saying they had not designed to cause chaos at the Parliament as it was painted to look like.
