Wednesday, February 21, 2024 –Rigathi Gachagua residence in Karen Nairobi is being upgraded and refurbished at a cost of sh 600 million.
Plans to make new the official residence are underway with the Budget Implementation Review Report by the Controller of Budget, confirming this.
This cost of refurbishment has already seen about sh 100 million used to start the crucial repair work in the resident commonly referred to as the ‘Hustler mansion’.
In our background checks, the home for the Deputy President saw the tax payers lose a whopping sh 450 in construction and completion.
A detailed report released by the Controller of Budget CoB Margaret Nyakang’o on Tuesday, revealed that the renovation work began in July 2023.
DP Gachagua, who was making his statement on the home, in March last year, told members of the press that the residence was leaking and needed thorough repair work.
He argued that it was not easy for him to occupy a home with leaking roofs, which he said, needed a lot of repairs after his predecessor William Ruto had left for the Statehouse.
“Even if I would want to move into the DP’s residence, that place is inhabitable. I found Ruto staying in a house where the roof is leaking. They had even moved to a corner of the house together with the wife,” DP Gachagua claimed.
He defended that, during Ruto’s tenancy, government of Uhuru Kenyatta did not allow any repairs to take place because of political differences.
He is on record blaming the past regime of neglecting the residence just to punish the then deputy president who by then was William Ruto.
“The official residence of the Deputy President was in bad shape when I became Deputy President. The rooftop was leaking, the borehole pump was broken down, and the house was totally in bad shape,” he announced.
Nonetheless, along the way, Gachagua moved to the home where he has been busy holding public meetings including important sub-Cabinet Committee meetings.
He has also been seen having high-profile diplomatic engagements at the residence.
