Sunday, July 17, 2022 –Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, has disclosed to the public how he recently rejected a plea by Azimio leadership urging him to step down for their ODM candidate Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir in Mombasa County.
Making this confirmation on live NTv interview hosted by Lofty Matambo on Saturday July 16 evening, Sonko revealed how Raila Odinga recently tried in vain to persuade him to drop his gubernatorial ambitions.
“Mr. Odinga urged me to step down in favour of Abdulswamad, but I did not comply with his request since I know I have more support on the ground. When I was there, my friend Uhuru called and requested me to go to State House in order to accompany him to inspect various projects,” Sonko stated.
The flamboyant politician noted that he believes is the favorite candidate for Mombasa residents and can deliver a lot for the Azimio coalition than any other candidate.
He also revealed that on the same day he mate Odinga at Wilson Airport, he also had some time with running mate Martha Karua before President Uhuru Kenyatta made a phone call requesting him to go to the Statehouse before taking a development tour around the city.
“I went to wait for Mr. Kalonzo at the Wilson Airport a couple of days ago before the Supreme Court hearing was set. I met my political mother, Martha Karua, with whom we exchanged pleasantries.
“When I was there, my friend Uhuru called and requested me to go to State House in order to accompany him to inspect various projects,” Sonko recounted.
A day later, the High Court in Nairobi would rule in favour of his candidature with many linking this victory to his reunion with Mr. Kenyatta.
However, Sonko would refute claims that the president had a hand in the ruling delivered by the Court.
Unfortunately, his victory would be short-lived when the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice CJ Martha Koome again shut down his ambitions.
The embattled politician has since promised to soldier on with the fight saying he still has a fighting chance through East Africa Court of Justice.
