Wednesday, September 13, 2013 -Opening a business is one of the most trending subjects today as everyone now wants to be not just a business person but a successful businessman.

And due to lack of jobs not only in Kenya but around the globe, one thing that most people are running to do is to launch a business.

Wines and Spirits shop is among the most lucrative business ventures one could start with an initial capital of at least $4000 or there about.

To start the drinks shop, first acquire all the required licensing which might be different according to your area of jurisdiction. Some parts of the world would require that you have normal trading license; while other jurisdictions may force you to have both trading and liquor license.

Additionally, some markets will also require that you acquire a health license from authorities. Requirements, though related, may vary alittle bit according to your area and, therefore, do some research first by doing a spot check from those already in business. Nothing also stops you from walking to any government office to ask what’s required of the business.

After that, secure a room but make sure its not just any room; it must be a good location where buyers can feel comfortable buying drinks. The room must also be safe (burglar proof so that you do not find your stock stolen).

Market for alcohol is huge and to find your stock stolen is a lot easier because those who steal have ready market out there. Therefore, safeguard your room with strong doors and CCTV cameras. It could help.

During your first days of opening, I would recommend that you have a few free drinks to introduce your business to the first bunch of customers who will then start bringing in more friends. Wines and Spirits shop relies on network and referrals – its all about telling a friend to tell a friend.

Last but not least, this is not an easy business. It has its fair share of challenges. Some of the challenges may include but not limited to drunk and stubborn customers who may fail to pay bills; and secondly, being supplied with expired or fake alcohol from rogue suppliers on loose out there.

If found by the police, you could be charged in a court of law and, therefore, it calls for high-level due diligence first.

Wines and Spirits business is capable of raking in millions in income every month because, nowadays, almost everyone drinks liquor.

Men, women, girls and boys – even those still in school – drink alcohol and will make a larger part of your clientele base.

And as the business picks up, be ready to become a good manager because you are going to hire more staff or, at least, an assistant to support you handle customers.

Remember to always take the opening and closing stocks every day. This cannot be overemphasized. To make this easier, you can install a stock-taking software in your computer or laptop or decide to use stock sheets – though the second option could be cumbersome at times.
