Thursday, August 26, 2021 -Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital KNH pursuing post graduate education will not be hired on a full time basis. Management has announced.
In its circular seen by Homenews.co.ke, the KNH defended the decision saying this will ensure safety and well-being of patients seeking treatment at the hospital.
The hospital maintained that doctors’ training is usually a vigorous exercise and therefore hard to force such workers to be on full time employment. It also dismissed claims by the union that it had fired some.
“It is worth noting that the hospital management has adhered to all the terms of doctor’s engagement. The hospital and ultimately the patient will be the loser if such doctors were to be on full employment,” KNH Chief Executive Officer Benson Kamuri said.
Kamuru added that the facility has been recording increased accidents and burnout among doctors associated with overwork. That most of the workers get little sleep or report when tired making it hard for them to deliver on their duty. Some have even committed suicide.
He also reasoned that it was not logic to risk lives of patients at the facility just to make happy career progressing doctors.
“During my watch, I will not sacrifice the quality care of patients so as to advance careers for few individuals,” he said.
He made these remarks after Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had staged demonstrations in protest of the new directive.
The union had claimed that doctors pursuing post graduate studies had been dismissed.
