Monday, September 18, 2023 –Thousands of unemployed youths today Monday September 18 turned up in huge numbers for army jobs which were, last week, advertised.
In a video that was widely shared on Monday morning, the National Youth Service NYS graduates who passed out in recent years turned up at the Embakasi Garrison Grounds in Nairobi to try their luck in the only 350 job vacancies advertised by the Kenya Defence Forces KDF.
The ground would end up being filled by mammoth crowds that went passed the Eastern Bypass; what triggered a traffic jam that forced traffic police to intervene and man the area so that movements could resume.

In the advert which was shared last week, the KDF employment drive targeted individuals who had trained at the National Youth Service NYS. And those interested in the job will continue showing up at the venue till this Friday.
Among other requirements and qualifications, KDF, in its advert, asked applicants to have an official clearance certificate from NYS with a minimum grade D Plain in the Kenya Secondary Education KCSE.
“Requirements are D plain and above, NYS discharge letter with credit of character very good. Please pass that information to the relevant candidates,” a section of the advert read.
This recruitment drive closely following that recently concluded which targeted specialist officers and trades officers – men and women – which closed up last Friday September 8 and the shortlisted announced.
When the recruitment from the NYS is over, the Forces with embark on interviewing the successful candidates from Monday next week.
Kenyans who saw the video from Embakasi Garrison today were shocked to learn that such a big number from fully trained NYS youths was yet to get hired.
A section also sought to understand what the current government was doing to fulfill the four million jobs pledge they made during the last year’s election campaigns.
Ruto Campaign pledge on unemployment
In 2021 on Monday October 25, then DP William Ruto, while campaigning for his bid in Makueni County, asked his competitors to come up with realistic proposals on how to curb youth unemployment.
“Kenya cannot be built by stipends. We need jobs and business opportunities that will make them economically independent,” Ruto said.
Ruto explained that youths unemployment in the country was a serious crisis that needed tangible fast, practical and sustainable solutions from a government.
He, therefore, offered to be the best bet for the challenge by asking the youth to support his bid so that the problem could be fixed.
Riding high on the Hustler Movement, Ruto would promise that, deliberately, he will implement programmes that will create jobs for the youths
And this year, Ruto added that through the Housing programe in the Finance Act, thousands of youths will be utilised in the construction sites.
