Friday, July 22, 2022 –Police have released the three suspect Venezuelans who were arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport JKIA carrying sensitive elections material.
This is after a thorough scrutiny by law enforcers which established that the said materials(stickers) were part of the IEBC elections order.
The National Police Service NPS led by spokesman Bruno Shioso has clarified that when one of the security men at JKIA noticed that the three men were in possession of elections material(stickers), he raised an alarm, what then led to their apprehension so that they could clarify why they were carrying such important materials, casually.
“That the stickers were not accompanied by an IEBC official as per the routine procedure. That police, as per standard procedure and arrangement with IEBC were not notified of such an import beforehand to provide necessary security and escort,” Bruno noted.
In their statement of Thursday July 21, the police added that the sensitivity of any elections material cannot be taken lightly especially in this country where elections are high stake.
Shioso has therefore defended his officers saying whatever they did was the right move any government will do any day.
“The said stickers were not declared as per the law and such sensitive materials were carried in the personal luggage of a foreigner,” the police statement went on.
The arrest of the three would see IEBC led by Wafula Chebukati raise protest concerns terming it as illegal at the time preparations for August 9 exercise are in top gear.
