Tuesday, May 18, 2021 -Cabinet Secretary without portfolio Raphael Tuju has fired a first warning at Judges for frustrating the Building Bridges Initiative BBI.
In his Monday May 17 interview on NTV, Mr. Tuju cautioned the Judiciary against picking a fight with the government which funds them.
Tuju also mentioned how the judges went blunt in their judgment by disrespecting the Head of State during their Thursday May 13 sitting.
For instance, Justices Teresia Matheka, Joel Ngugi, George Odunga, Jairus Ngaah, and Chacha Mwita poured cold water on the entire BBI document which they described as an illegal project that must be stopped this early. In their disparaging ruling, they reduced President Uhuru Kenyatta to someone who was misleading the country almost in everything he did.
“Judges should learn the word ‘interdependence’ because as soon as they finish a ruling, they need policemen to escort them home as guards or drivers. The world is much more complicated,” Tuju reminded the court officers.
Shortly, the Law Society of Kenya LSK President Nelsen Havi led a team of lawyers in castigating Mr. Tuju for his recklessness.
“Raphael Tuju, hear and get me loud and clear. Your behaviour seems to know no limit. Judges volunteer to serve in an Arm of Government. Their security is not a privilege but a right. This is not the Uganda of the 1970s. Cross that line again and you will live to regret it,” Havi warned.
Another lawyer went on to remind the Jubilee Secretary General that Judges will never require any favour from the State. They require to be respected as their rights demands of it.
“Security to the judges is not a favour from the Executive but a right. The police service is not the property of the state but of all Kenya citizens,” one J Kiprotich added.
According to Mr Tuju, it was a wrong gesture to see the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya with his team hold celebrations over the fall of BBI; an initiative which is holding the country together.
