Friday, October 13, 2023 –Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has hinted at running for the top seat after President William Ruto’s term is over.
Speaking during Tobong’u Lore, the Turkana Cultural Festival in Lodwar which Dr. Ruto also attended on Thursday October 12, the ODM Party elected governor urged Kenyans to support the current head of State to fulfill his promises smoothly, then after that, his successor can pick up from there when things are stable.
He also supported the idea of Ruto’s term extension to seven years each saying this will help any leader to achieve many things as per the campaign manifesto.
He proposed at least a seven year term in office for the president and added that this should be put in the Constitution as early as possible.
“After your 14 years, I will be president. As Turkana County Governor from the onset, I vowed to work with you,” Lomorukai, who assumed power in August 2022, stated.
He openly said he cannot continue working with the opposition which lost the presidency and instead threw his support behind the ruling party.
He faulted those forcing him to remain in the opposition saying decency and democracy allows free movement of loyalty for development reasons.
He, therefore, asked his party leader Raila Odinga to accept the decision and allow him to move close to the ruling coalition of Kenya Kwanza.
In Turkana County, Raila garnered a whopping 95,620 votes against William Ruto who got a distant 46,510.
Ruto managed to get his votes in the area due to the presence of former governor Jospaht Nanok who lost to Jeremiah.
The former Turkana Governor Mr. Nanok was appointed the Deputy Chief of Staff. Mr Nanok seemed to have been primed for the position given his contribution during the presidential campaigns.
President Ruto said the festival brings members of the community from neighbouring South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia, building cohesion and helping to prevent conflict through positive interaction.
