She went ahead to share a screenshot that showed Twitter’s official account having the grey checkmark label beneath the handle.

“A lot of folks have asked about how you’ll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the “Official” label to select accounts when we launch,” she noted.

This is a new twist of events at the Elon Musk-owned social media company that seeks to raise revenues for its sustainability.

Though the grey checkmark is free, it will only be available to government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.

“Not all previously verified accounts will get the “Official” label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures,” Crawford explained.

In the screengrab Crawford shared, Twitter official account had both checkmarks – regular blue and the new grey – meaning that accounts can concurrently run with both marks.
