Tuesday, September 26, 2023 –Kenya will be receiving a staggering $100 million an equivalent of sh 14.6 billion for the five-year Haiti security mission to commence soon.
The announcement was made by Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale in Nairobi on Monday September 25.
Duale noted that the Kenyan forces heading to Haiti will be fully supported by the United States of American U.S.A in a multimillion collaboration deal.
U.S Government hand
In that regard, the U.S.A government has promised to release the sh 14.6 billion to the Ministry of Defense. And in addition, it has agreed to help with four other benefits including intelligence, airlift, communications and medical support throughout the five-year mission exercise.
The deal signed between the two nations is also aimed at helping ramp up Kenya’s security levels and preparedness in combating increasing terrorism within the borders.
“Now, the U.S. government deeply values our partnership with Kenya in countering al-Shabaab. We’re grateful to Kenya for its leadership in tackling security challenges in the region and around the world,” stated U.S Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.
Lloyd went on to urge other countries to emulate what Kenya is doing so that to help curb the emerging lawlessness in some parts of the world.
“We intend to work with the United States Congress to provide up to $100 million in support. We urge others in the international community to follow Kenya’s great example and to step up to provide more personnel, equipment, support, training, and funding,” he announced.
Duale speaking on deployment of police
On his part, Duale stated that, what is remaining is only an official approval by the United Nations UN so that to start dispatching the Kenyan troops to Haiti in an exercise that will run for five straight years.
“We are waiting for the United Nations Security Council to give approval for us to take our troops to Haiti,” CS Duale stated.
President William Ruto’s administration pledged to deploy at least 1000 police officers in Haiti starting this year.
Together with the 10,000 Haiti officers, the team will be working to ensure there is law and order in the country now boasting of 11 million citizens.
Lawlessness in Haiti has seen thousands of citizens die in clashes that started immediately after the assassination of former president decades ago.
In 1915, Haitian president Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam was assassinated and the situation in Haiti quickly became unstable. In response, President Wilson sent the U.S. Marines to Haiti, claiming the invasion was an attempt to prevent anarchy.
U.S President Joe Biden on Haiti mission
His successor Joe Biden has continued with the same spirit asking countries from Africa to help deploy mission in Haiti.
During the recent event dubbed The Committee of Africa Heads of State on Climate Change at the African Union AU Mission in New York City, Biden publicly recognized Kenya’s head of State for agreeing to send troops in the war-torn Haiti.
On the other hand, President William Ruto ,while meeting with the U.S Secretary of Defense in the Statehouse Nairobi on Monday September 25, said Kenya takes pride in its frontline effort to combating radicalisation, terrorism and the associated criminality in the Horn of Africa.
The commander-in-chief added that, the firm support from the global community, like the United States, has been invaluable in securing the region. “We will keep working jointly to rebuild and make Africa more stable and prosperous”.
