UDA Government Must Have Lied to us About SHA. Its not Working

When President William Ruto was deep in campaigns, he promised to reduce health insurance premium from Ksh 500 to Ksh 300 per unemployed person.

Riding high on his Hustler rallying agenda and manifesto, Ruto and his brigade lied to us that we will witness a complete shift from poor health and education services to standard services similar to what takes place in developed world.

And, luckily, he took power and among the very first things he implemented was to change NHIF to SHA saying this was the only way health in the country would be universal.

Now his second year in office and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is facing financial struggles five months after its official rollout, according to the Ministry of Health report.

SHIF, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in October last year, has faced numerous challenges, but for the first time, the government has openly admitted payment delays.

While addressing the press at Afya House on Wednesday, February 12, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mulongo and the Director General of Health Dr Patrick Amoth revealed that, of the 19 million Kenyans registered with the national scheme, only 3.3 million Kenyans are contributing to the scheme.

“Health services are expensive, and we cannot only have those in formal employment bearing the burden of the rest of the Kenyan population,” said Dr Amoth.

This report signals another astronomical failure on the part of Kenya Kwanza administration.
