Thursday, June 20, 2024 –Molo Member of Parliament MP Kimani Kuria has shared that he received a staggering sh 168,000 from Kenyans.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Wednesday June 19, MP Kuria revealed to the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula that Kenyans who were trying to confirm his mobile phone number had sent Mpesa to him worth sh 160000.
“I don’t know what to do with the Ksh168,000 Kenyans sent me to confirm my number,” MP Kimani Kuria noted.
Blaming Kenyans for breaching privacy act by sharing out MPs contact numbers, Kuria who is elected on United Democratic Alliance UDA Party, said though that he had positively acknowledged the generosity of Kenyans on social media in good faith.
He also noted that he has since written to the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula to seeking advice on how to utilise the gift given to him by the public.
State officials are, by law, prohibited from receiving cash or kind gifts from the public, companies or foreign agencies.
Kuria received the Mobile money from members of the public who were up in arms against the Finance Bill 2024. The public had shared mobile numbers of their respective MPs in a bid to pile pressure on them not to pass the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
On this note, the Data Protection Commission DPC has moved with speed to issue a stern cautionary statement against sharing private personal data. In its statement signed on Wednesday June 19, the agency warns members of the public against acts of leaking personal data of any kind.
Those found sharing such information will be prosecuted and fined in accordance with the law.
