Tuesday, August 2, 2022 –Mr. Jakaya Kikwete has come to the defense of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to support a candidate of his choice.
Speaking in Nairobi during his Monday arrival, the former Tanzanian President noted that there was nothing wrong with Mr. Kenyatta deciding on who he thinks is well placed to take over from him.
He said that the outgoing president has a right, just like any other leader, to support Mr. Odinga or his deputy William Ruto.
“President Uhuru to involve himself in the elections is okay, he is also Kenyan who should vote, he has a right to express his political thoughts,” Jakaya said.
This observation by Kikwete is coming against the backdrop of calls from Kenya Kwanza leaders that Uhuru should take a back seat ahead of the August polls.
Kenyatta made public his intentions to leave power in the safer hands of Mr. Odinga saying Ruto, for some reason or the other, needs more time to calm and grow.
Kikwete arrived in the country to spearhead the East African Community observer mission comprising of 52 officials who will be around to monitor the forthcoming electoral exercise scheduled August 9, next week.
The group will camp in the country for a period of two weeks.
