Tuesday, October 12, 2021 –Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta has moved fast to form a steering committee mandated to implement guidelines from Task force on power.
In the new directives from the president, the committee chaired by John Ngumi is required to, within six months, reduce the cost of power for Kenyans.
The procedure requires that the committee negotiates with independent power supplies to cut down power tariffs. This will be one of the surest ways of lowering electricity bills that have become a burden to many poor families.
Further, this committee is supposed to implement necessary reforms at the government parastatal and make sure there is sanity within the sector.
In the report, it will also be required to implement a consumer tariff reduction from an average of sh 24 to sh 16 per KwH, This will also be done in ensuring there are recorded profits in the sector and this will be reported to the head of State on a regular basis.
According to well-placed sources, the John Ngumi-led steering committee will be providing the president with their first report before December 5 this year.
