Friday, July 8, 2022 –President Uhuru Kenyatta has for the first time revealed unknown details on what was going on behind the scenes when opposition leader Raila Odinga was swearing in himself at Uhuru Park in 2018.
Addressing hundreds of religious leaders at Statehouse today Friday July 8, Mr. Kenyatta said he endured immense pressure from William Ruto and his allies who wanted him to visit terror on the then National Super Alliance NASA leader Raila Odinga who was planning to seize power by force through the historic Uhuru Park swearing in ceremony.
It was one of the most delicate moments in the country that only required a mature approach to handle for the sake of peace and unity.
“When things were bad and some people went to swear themselves in, there are those who wanted me to send my soldiers but I stood firm and said no. I let them be and there was peace. I still reached out to them so we could talk,” Uhuru recalled.
Further, in an apparent reference to his deputy, Mr. Kenyatta said a section of his allies had expressed reservations against Odinga’s daring move; but he decided to remain firm and principled to save the country from bloodshed.
“There was a lot of opposition to the talks by the chest-thumping team and even after I pleaded with them, they made it their job to always attack me,” he added.
This revelation comes hot on the heels of his acrimonious fallout with his defiant deputy who is threatening to grab power from ‘dynasties’ through the controversial and divisive Hustlers’ Gospel.
