Wednesday, October 5, 2022 –Former president Uhuru Kenyatta is set to kick-start his first foreign peace talks just weeks after he was appointed by President William Ruto in that capacity.
The ex-president is expected to fly to South Africa where he will be linking up with other panelists including former President of Nigeria, Olesegun Obasanjo, who is the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa.
“The Peace talks between the two parties, is expected to deliberate on the guiding principles, agenda issues, modalities, format and timelines for the negotiated settlement aimed at laying the foundation for a structured and sustained mediation between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF, towards durable resolution of the conflict,” a statement read partly.
The Sunday October 8 event is aimed at making peace between the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front TPLF.
“The Peace talks will be facilitated and led by H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa and former President of Nigeria, with the support of a panel of distinguished and eminent Africans. H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of the Republic Kenya, and H.E. Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Member of the AU Panel of the Wise and former Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, will serve as panelists for the peace talks process,” also read the statement.
Homenews.co.ke has since learnt that the letter was drafted by Moussa Faki Mahamat and addressed to the National Regional State of Tigray President Debretsion Gebremichael.
Should Dr. Debretsion confirm his attendance, this may turn out to be the highest-level effort to put to end the war in Ethiopia that has so far claimed thousands of innocent lives.
President William Ruto recently appointed his predecessor Uhuru into the team during his inauguration ceremony which took place at Moi Sports Center Kasarani.
