Sunday, August 7, 2022 –Kenya Kwanza camp has raised concerns after President Uhuru Kenyatta was announced to appear on an interview with local radio and Tv stations from his backyard.
Kameme FM, Kameme TV, Inooro FM, Inooro TV, Meru TV, Coro FM, Wimwaro FM, Gukena FM, among others today Sunday August 7 will be hosting the head of State in a session that will kick off at exactly 6PM.
This development has, however, fetched a lot of reactions from Kenya Kwanza brigade which claims that the president is tactically still campaigning for Mr. Odinga despite campaign period having elapsed yesterday.
Led by Murang’a Senator Irungu Kanag’ata, they claim that Uhuru who is the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Chairman is breaking the electoral laws by continuing to grant interviews to media houses so as to help drum up support for Mr. Odinga
“Dear Chebukati, Azimio chairman intends to violate this law today. I have annexed the evidence of the intention. I hereby formally inform you of that intention and, if the intention is actualised, please take action,” Kang’ata protested.
It is argued that all electoral laws are supposed to be adhered to and that breaking of any is punishable by law.
“If a politician is caught campaigning past the set deadline, he/she can be subjected to a fine of six months in prison or can be barred from contesting in any elective seat for a period not more than two consecutive terms,” Lawyer Apollo Mboya explained.
For instance, in 2018 when Nandi Hills lawmaker, Alfred Keter, was accused of having violated the same electoral law, the High Court ended up nullifying his candidature in favour of the complainant, Bernard Kitur.
This nullification, luckily, was short lived as Keter marched to the Appellate Court where the ruling would end up being overturned.
