Tuesday, March 14, 2023 – United States of America USA government has come to the aid of Lesbians and gays community in the country.
Speaking today Tuesday March 14 in Nairobi, US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has reiterated the US government’s commitment to back the LGBTQI+ community in Kenya and Africa saying the members were now facing a threat from various administrations.
Citizen.Digital reported that, Whitman underscored how the US government is actively championing the recognition of the LGBTQI+ community while noting that having prejudice towards the movement amounts to infringing on basic human rights.
“Over the past week my team and I met with the LGBTQI+ community & stakeholders
to support human rights of LGBTQI+ persons.“The U.S. proudly advances efforts to protect LGBTQI+ persons from discrimination
& violence and will continue to stand up for human rights & equality,” said Whitman.
She said this barely two weeks after the US, through her, distanced itself from accusations of promoting the vice in Kenya.
For instance, on March 3, 2023, Whitman, on behalf of her government, came out to dismiss any links between the drought relief donations and the controversial ruling by the Supreme Court regarding same-sex rights.
Recently, both President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua made their stand public on the controversial debate.
Ruto condemned the ruling which favoured the LGBTQ community; sentiments that his deputy Gachagua also corroborated.
“I was shocked and even wondered what I could say. Do you know that there are times when you can be shocked until you have nothing to say? We are hearing that there is an organisation that wants to defend same-sex marriage. What is that?
“We have no problem with the court but we have to ask what they imagine when a woman marries another woman. We do not have that and that is against our beliefs,” Gachagua further stated.
Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, giving his views, called out the Supreme Court for ruling in favour of the organization.
