Monday, October 2, 2023 –Governor Anne Waiguru was, on Monday, reelected for the second term as the Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson.
The Kirinyaga Governor was elected in an exercise that was described as general consensus on Monday October 2.
The election event was conducted during a full Council meeting held in Nairobi where the winner promised her full commitment on making sure devolved units stand.
She explained that, for devolution to reach greater heights, there is need for enough quick funding from the national government.
The second time governor, further urged county leaders to put together their heads so that to find other ways of raising own revenues in their places.
She also mentioned health care as a key area in the devolution same to education, though, not fully devolved.
Governor Waiguru shot to the top of governor’s council in the year 2022 following a defeat she visited on Narok Governor Ole Lenku of Azimio.
Ditching Jubilee for UDA Party
In Kirinyaga County, she ran on United Democratic Alliance UDA Party ticket after she ditched Jubilee Party months to the general election.
Her joining Ruto’s party saw her close competitor Purity Wangui bold out in anger to run as an independent candidate.
Purity then claimed that Dr. Ruto whom she had supported in cash and kind, had betrayed her to bring in Waiguru.
This came as a blessing for Waiguru who used UDA Party’s Central Region popularity to bag her second term in office, with a lot of ease.
Since then, she has remained loyal to President William Ruto’s ruling party – UDA Party.
Before joining mainstream politics, Waiguru had been appointed as Devolution cabinet secretary by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
NYS Corruption cases
During her tenure in office, she would face mega corruption accusations where the National Youth Service NYS lost billions of monies under her watch.
The cases ended up in court but she managed to fight them some successful some still actively pending their conclusion.
She was among the first female governors to win the gubernatorial seat in the country. Others are former Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu, Nakuru’ Susan Kihika(Nakuru) and Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga who is serving her first term in office on ODM Party ticket.
