Tuesday, October 3, 2023 –Embattled former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu now wants impeached governors to be given a second chance to run for office.
Addressing this before the ongoing Bomas of Kenya National Dialogue Committee NADC, the former Governor of Kiambu County proposed that there is need to allow impeached governor to contest in subsequent elections.
He told the ceasefire committee on Tuesday October 3 that it was not logical to ban governors accused of graft because some cases are politically motivated.
To prove his case, Mr. waititu said, many county CEOs who do not support the ruling party and government are always made the target of such impeachments.
”The initial idea of impeachment was not meant to be political, it was made to check the excesses of the governor,” stated Waititu.
He cited his own case as the best suitable example of how things unfolded leading to his final removal from office and, in his place, taken by his deputy james Nyoro who was by that time aligned to the sitting President.
He narrated to the Kalonzo-Ichung’wah-led committee that Uhuru’s regime was notorious of fighting anyone who did not go along with it.
”Since the Governor will have fallen out with the regime or the support of the politicians, it should only be for that period that the governor was elected,” the politician noted.
The Council of Governors CoG led by its Chairlady Anne Waiguru also submitted similar proposals regarding removal of Governors from office.
CoG submitted that no motion of impeachment of governors should be introduced in a period of 12 months after and before elections.
The CoG team led by Waiguru showed up at the Bomas Yesterday Monday October 2 where it also asked for a strengthened devolution structure.
