Time for shaking up the government to align itself with the Handshake spirit has come and President William Ruto and his new ally Raila Odinga must be busy somewhere in a room crafting the new-look government.
The greatest undoing in the current administration is how appointments were done. Ruto focused much on appointing friends and family. That is why he found it difficult losing the likes of Kipchumba Murkomen permanently. He made sure even after sending them home during the June 2024 Gen Zs onslaught, he again coiled his way out to sneak them back into the Cabinet.
President Ruto also sneaked Eliud Owalo back to his team. Probably not because Owalo and Murkomen are dedicated public servants but because they are his friends. There is something he does with them which we don’t know. He also sneaked Mr. Davis Chirchir back into the Cabinet. It’s okay because its his government. But it cannot be entirely his, we are affected by their conduct and service delivery. Poor public officers affect us alot that the president himself. That’s why we must be concerned and alert.
That said, it’s time now for Raila Odinga to get half of the State positions. We hope Odinga will hire the right people. We hope he will not be recycling back akina Charity Ngilu who, seemingly, must now be making calls to him(Odinga) seeking to be returned to government. Ngilu is notorious of getting her way back into any government. She can even buy the position. But we are alert! We can’t allow this madness to repeat.
We know Odinga is good at appointments but, sometimes, he also misses the point. He is a man who has been on record appointing family and friends. Just like all other presidents of this country. But we urge them(Ruto and Raila) to sit down and agree on meritocracy. Kenya is now tired of politics 24/7. Let us have serious people in the Cabinet and government.
Raila and Ruto risk public test. Should they get things wrong this time, be sure they will never recover public trust again. And as Kenyans who have suffered enough, we won’t close our eyes and won’t lose our civic duty.
