Wednesday, October 2, 2024 –National Assembly Speaker Mooses Wetang’ula has responded to those calling for his recusal in the impeachment matter facing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Following an uproar from a section of lawmakers led by Marakwet West Member of Parliament Toroitich Timothy Kipchumba, Wetang’ula said that he has nothing personal against the DP and that he was commenting on the church sermon that corresponded with the topic of that Sunday.
Kipchumba had told the House that both Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and his deputy, uasin Gishu Woman Represented Gladys Boss Shollei, had already expressed their dissatisfaction with the DP and, therefore, they were going to deliver a skewed ruling in the Parliament.
Wetang’ula, however, has changed his tune and revealed that he remains neutral on the impeachment matter and that he was resonating with the church service he had attended on that particular Sunday.
“The priest based his homily on the book of Mark9:38, the book says if the wicked people in society tie a huge stone around their neck and toss them into the sea, it is not me who said it, it’s in the book. The book also says if your right hand causes you to stumble, chop it off, if your right leg causes you to stumble, chop it off, if your right eye causes you to stumble remove it. And all I said is that the homily was great and our society should live that way.
“I have no vote in this matter, I have no dog in this fight. I can assure you the proceedings will proceed by fairness, the law, the Constitution, and the rules of natural justice.”
On Tuesday, the National Assembly approved the motion to impeach Deputy President Mr. Gachagua that was tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse who accused the DP of over 10 accounts.
Among the violations leveled against the DP include breaches of the Constitution, corruption, and ethic incitement.
