Tuesday, October 18, 2022 –Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has claimed that it is not a requirement for Cabinet Secretaries to have a Degree certificate to qualify for the position.
Making this pronouncements today Tuesday October 18 on the Parliament building, the newly-elected Speaker of the National Assembly stated that his duty to vet CSs is not concerned with the academic papers of the candidates and that this will not form part of the basis of the exercise.
He was speaking this in defense of former Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa whose academic papers had stirred heat in the House with National Assembly leader of Majority Opiyo Wandayi seeking to know the authenticity of her 2015 Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology JKUAT Degree which she had brought along with her.
“In fact, this must be clarified even by the university perhaps, whether this is a mere certificate, course or executive master of leadership and governance,” Wandayi erupted from the panel.
But Speaker Wetang’ula quickly shut him up saying Degree or not is neither here nor there and this is not the requirement.
“If it turns out not to be a genuine degree, it is neither here nor there. We leave it to the agencies that handles matters of this nature.
“The very most we can do is ask the quality assurance agency in education to tell us what it is. There is no requirement to have a degree to be nominated to be a Cabinet Minister,” he asserted.
He also reminded the panel that it cannot delve into declaring genuine and bogus academic papers because it has no such mandate.
Ms Jumwa was nominated by President William Ruto to take over the Gender and Affirmative Action docket in the new administration.
