Sunday, June 11, 2023 –Senate Speaker Moses Wetang’ula faced off with a section of Azimio la Umoja-allied politicians in Western over the controversial Finance Bill2023.

On Sunday June 11, politicians met in a local function organised at Lwandeti area in Kakamega County where the Parliament speaker faulted the opposition for what he described as misleading the country on the Finance Bill.

Wetang’ula noted that whatever the opposition was propagating was not true saying it is heartbreaking to see the people who should be helping voters to understand the Bill are the same ones hellbent on fighting it.

The former Bungoma Senator asked MPs to stop misleading the public on the content of the document and push for amendments of the clauses they feel were not good for Kenyans.

Wetang’ula stated that the Constitution gives legislators enough powers to push for amendments on clauses that they single out as unfriendly to the people.

“And that is what I urge them to do instead of decampaigning the document in public meetings in villages. They will have an opportunity to vote for the Bill “clause by clause,” he said.

He was supported by health Cabinet Secretary CS Susan Nakhumicha who listed a number of positive clauses that are in the Bill among them, reduced cost of production for health facilities and drugs, reduced NHIF premiums among many others.

“They are not saying about other things like easy environment for medical processes as well as NHIF premium moving from sh 500 to sh 300,” she said.

Their remarks were quickly countered by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa as well as his vocal deputy Ayub Savula.

“We urge you to involve the country in your every decision. Take views from all corners before thinking of passing that Bill,” Fernandes stated.

His Deputy, Mr. Savula, wondered why Mr. Wetang’ula, who is in a better position of helping the president make better decisions, was not doing so.
